Who we are
Here at Roam K9s, we’ve been where you are. Whether you’re getting your first ever puppy, trying to prepare yourself for a new rescue you want to open your home to, or you’re already in over your head with your dog- we hear you. We asses each dog and owner duo individually to determine what their needs are and how we can best work together to create a healthy relationship between you and your dog.
Just like people, we experience life through a lens of our past experiences. While those experiences and emotions are valid, it can take some of us weeks, months, or years to begin changing old habits and our mindset about things that make us uncomfortable. Whether that is due how you were brought up, an incident that occurred in your life, or just being who you are- it helps to have some guidance and support while you begin to make life changes. The same thing goes for your dog. We like to think of dog training like actionable therapy for your dog.
Meet the owner: Lex
Hi there. My life has always been attached to the four-legged sidekicks. I’m an outdoorsy soul, so having a dog that is versatile enough to drive hours up the coast, swim all day at the lake, march up a mountain for a three-day trek in the forest, or sit at a coffee shop in the desert while I get some me time in- is crucial.
I started off volunteering at shelters when I was 15 years old. Things were different in the shelter system back then. They’d release 15 dogs into the yard and tell me “good luck, holler if you need us.” You learn to read dogs’ body language quickly, break up fights even faster, and start to figure out that maybe there isn’t just one way to train a dog.
My dedication to this industry changed when my one year old German Shepherd, Koda, was attacked by another dog. It changed everything about how he existed in the world, and not in a positive way. It would end up costing me a whole lot of money and a heck of a lot more hours to even begin to crack the surface of what behavioral modification would mean for Koda’s and my journey.
So now I’m here, shelter volunteer turned dog trainer. Helping humans find some peace of mind with their four-legged companions and letting dogs get back to being the free spirits they were meant to be. Roaming wild and free.
